The company has offered gender affirmation since 2012.
Starbucks will now offer its trans employees comprehensive healthcare for a variety of treatments.
The coffee giant has been offering gender affirmation surgery since 2012 but will now include coverage such as breast reduction, augmentation, facial feminization, hair transplants, and other transition-related care reports New Now Next.
These surgeries are important to the health and well-being of trans and gender non-conforming folks but have traditionally been seen as elective to others.
Starbucks looked to World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) for guidance and inclusive policies.
“The approach was driven not just by the company’s desire to provide truly inclusive coverage, and by powerful conversations with transgender partners about how those benefits would allow them to truly be who they are,” said Ron Crawford, vice president of benefits at Starbucks.
He added: “You have to think of it from an equity perspective. Nobody else is doing this. We would love to see more employers doing this.”
