The straight pride organization's catchphrase is "It's Great to be Straight."
The organizers of straight pride, an event scheduled to take place in Boston this August, got a very clear message from Netflix; one of the sponsors they list by way of wishful thinking.
Super Happy Fun America (SHFA) is the organization putting on the event and in doing so cushioned their sponsor list with unconfirmed companies who clearly have no interest in being involved, Netlfix being one of them.
“You should know that we’re unafraid of bullies. Our legal department is here, it’s queer, and it’s telling you to steer clear,” Netflix wrote in an email to SHFA.
“You are using the Netflix logo to promote your event, which despite its name is about hate–not pride. That’s gross and deeply hurtful, but it’s also deceptive misinformation and infringes our legal rights.”
“Netflix has nothing to do with your organization or event. Indeed, it’s telling that you feel the need to lie to gain legitimacy."
Netflix legal brass demanded that SHFA remove the streaming service's logo from promo cards and on the website within 24 hours.
Response from the SHFA did nothing to address the false information charge. Instead, they accused the company of being "heterophobic" and "steeped in hatred and bigotry."
“They not only rejected our offer but threatened us with litigation if we did not stop using their name and logo, which is perfectly legal for editorial or informational purposes.”
They went on to say Netflix is being a bully. "It appears that their legal department is staffed by gay supremacists who are so accustomed to privilege that our goal of equality for straights feels like oppression to them."
SHFA's corporate sponsor list is only a prospective one, though they don't say so. And they have confirmed that none of them have actually come on board.
According to LGBTQ Nation, JP Morgan has filed a trademark infringement claim against SHFA for using their logo.
The straight pride parade, according to the organization's website "will be a one-day event consisting of a parade followed by a ceremony where the Straight Pride Flag will be raised at City Hall."
