He says the accusations are insensitive and it's lucky he's not gay and closeted.
Chart-topping pop sensation Shawn Mendes may have some guy's hearts aflutter, but the handsome swooner says he is not gay and the constant speculation about whether he is or not is stressing him out.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the 20-year-old "Youth" singer says it's gotten so bad he feels he may have something to prove.
“In the back of my heart, I feel like I need to go be seen with someone—like a girl—in public, to prove to people that I’m not gay,” he explains in the article. “Even though in my heart I know that it’s not a bad thing. There’s still a piece of me that thinks that. And I hate that side of me.”
He tells the publication that the implications get so bad that he analyzes the way he talks and sits in on-camera interviews.
Another incident concerning him and eyeshadow made him "sick" he says. Taylor Swift posted an Instagram video of Mendes sporting some glitter eye makeup and it caused him some insomnia after granting her permission to post it.
“I felt sick,” he says. “I was like, ’F**k, why did I let her post that?’ I just fed the fire that I’m terrified of.”
The constant conjecture is not only false he says, but it could also be damaging if he were a deeply closeted gay person.
“I thought, ’You f**king guys are so lucky I’m not actually gay and terrified of coming out.’ That’s something that kills people,” he says. “That’s how sensitive it is. Do you like the songs? Do you like me? Who cares if I’m gay?”
Mendes was recently the subject of a docu-short directed by YouTube star Casey Neistat for the streaming service's Artist Spotlight Story series.
