The original "Alice" also has a set of pipes and will appear at Martinis Above Fourth on Nov. 10
On November 10, 2018, legendary singer and actress Linda Lavin will perform her cabaret show “Linda Lavin Sings!” at Martinis Above Fourth in San Diego.
Lavin, who many remember for her starring turn in the television series “Alice” (1976-85), is no stranger to cabaret. In fact, she had her first solo act in the early 60s.
Her career was in its earliest stages when she found work singing in nightclubs in Greenwich Village owned by famed club owner and producer, Jan Wallman. The young performer was in good company at Wallman’s clubs which showcased other up-and-comers like Joan Rivers and Barbra Streisand.
“Her clubs all had Downstairs in the name of them, so I was always underground!” Lavin told San Diego Gay and Lesbian News. “They were never street-level, her clubs.”
Though Lavin has been to San Diego many times in her storied career, this will be her first performance at Martinis Above Fourth and she laughed while reminiscing about those bygone days in the “Downstairs” clubs.
“I love the name Martinis Above Fourth,” she exclaimed. “It already sounds like we’re well above ground level!”
Her current show, which features famed composer, pianist, and vocalist Billy Stritch on piano and her own husband, Steve Bakunas, on drums, is a retrospective on her career and life and the songs that have meant so much to her along the way. Many of the songs were made famous by the singer herself, while others come from the American songbook and entertainers like Rosemary Clooney, Peggy Lee, Judy Garland and even Steely Dan.
“Singing is my first language,” Lavin explained. “This club act has changed a lot since we first started doing it twelve to fifteen years ago because I keep bringing new songs and stories to the stage with me. I do duets with Billy, and Steve and I sing a duet that describes our lives together. It’s very intimate, but it also has that spark of spontaneity.”
In fact, Lavin says, the feel of the evening reminds her of entertaining guests in her own living room, and she hopes that the audience feels the same way.
“That connections matters,” she said, her voice taking on a wistful tone. “No matter the size of the club or theater, it has to be intimate. I feel like I’m telling my own story through song and the audience is part of that experience. It’s a real joy to do. That’s why I do it.”
“Linda Lavin Sings!” will be presented November 10, 2018 at Martinis Above Fourth, 3490 Fourth Avenue, Second Floor, San Diego, CA. Limited tickets are still available.
