The "Orange is the New Black" star gets personal in an interview.
Transgender actress and LGBT activist Laverne Cox has made history for being the first trans person to grace the cover of a Cosmopolitan Magazine.
The Orange is the New Black star used social media to show her excitement as cover girl for the publication and the “Say Yes to Love” themed issue. .
According to UK LGBT publication Pink News, the actress wrote a letter which was printed in the magazine saying, “Your voice matters, the truth of who you know yourselves to be matters. The truth will set you free! Trans women deserve to be loved out in the open and in the light.”
Also inside this special edition, Laverne talks about some personal things she's never spoken about publicly.
“As a black transgender woman, I’ve often been kept a secret by the men I’ve dated,” she says. “So when my ex-boyfriend introduced me to his dad, and invited me to spend Hanukkah with him and his family, it was the most special thing ever.”
Cosmopolitan South Africa Editor in Chief Holly Meadows says Cosmo wants to show their support and Laverne represents many things that will help challenge and educate others.
“Our goal was to play a small part in providing visibility for the LGBTQI+ community, of which Laverne has become a revolutionary icon," she said. “We wanted to disrupt hetero-normative ideas around February and Valentine’s Day and look at love in 2018 – including acceptance of self, others and non-binary relationships.”
Meadows continues to say Laverne represents female strength and tenacity.
“Cox is the world’s most vocal trans poster girl and an activist for the intersection of race, class and gender identities, challenging toxic masculinity, white supremacy and the misrepresentation of trans people. For us at COSMO, love – at least for this issue – is celebrating Laverne as the fun, fearless female she is.”
Season six of Cox's drama Orange is the New Black will premiere on Netflix later this year.
