People are asking if Blake Shelton is really "The Sexiest Man Alive"

Social media is very confused about People Magazine’s choice of “Sexiest Man Alive” this year. Yes everyone has their own opinion, but it seems there are more readers who think there are "sexier" men out there and apparently People wasn’t looking for them.

People's Twitter feed is loaded with nothing but disapproval of their choice: Blake Shelton.

Their annual issue started in 1985 with Mel Gibson gracing the cover. Over the years Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, David Beckham and Channing Tatum have taken the title.

But this year some question the publication’s choice in country music star and The Voice co-coach Shelton, partially because they don't think he's "sexy," and also because of some problematic tweets he made in 2011.

People following the story have even started a stream of memes and posts which say they are looking for the sexy, followed by gifs of people with binoculars and magnifying glasses, “still can’t find it,” one post read.

Going further a few readers compared Shelton to looking like 70's British comedian Benny Hill.

Some of the comments on the Twitter under People Magazine's announcement read:

I normally don’t have an opinion on this superficial title but this is an AWFUL pick! Blech! -Melanie

Apparently EVERYONE ELSE was busy – Pop Culture Mom

Dear People Magazine: please allow me to introduce you to Jason Momoa! Enough said? – Lady Juliet

Sexy? Sure, but to be rated the sexiest man ALIVE? No – Madison Taylor

I'm as country as they come but I just don't see it. Cool? Yes. A riot? Yes. Sexy? Not so much imo -Laura Harnish

You know yall done f**ked up when 99% of the comments on this tweet are girls disagreeing. Lmao

Followers are posting their own suggestion to People through Twitter; Chris Evans is a popular choice or Sam Heughan. Idris Elba even comes to mind.

But it may be because of his twitter past that some are saying Shelton's not worthy of the title.

One poster even struck out "Sexiest" and photoshopped the word "Sexist" in its place.

You see, back in 2011 Shelton had some Tweets of his own, some were misogynistic, racist and homophobic. There was even one questionable Tweet about his "sick fantasy" of Dakota Fanning who was 16 at the time.

"So I just figured out a great excuse for my sick fantasy about Dakota Fanning. I thought she was Amanda Seyfried," he wrote.

And one about out talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, "I'm not gay but I think ellen is hot...wait, what?" and "If you haven't noticed Richard Simmons is gay, you haven't noticed Katy Perrys boobs.." and "Question for my gay followers... Are skittles y'all's favorite candy?"

He did make an attempt an apology for those tweets after the public got wind of them:

"Everyone knows comedy has been a major part of my career and it's always been out there for anyone to see. That said anyone that knows me also knows I have no tolerance for hate of any kind or form. Can my humor at times be inappropriate and immature? Yes. Hateful? Never. That said I deeply apologize to anybody who may have been offended."

To be fair, not everyone is going to agree on who the "Sexiest Man Alive" should be, but it seems this year's choice is not a fan favorite.
