Georgia Mayor Derek Easterling who oversees Kennesaw (pop. 29,783) will do almost anything that will help a good cause including dressing in drag, but some people didn’t find it amusing.

Easterling is a Republican and was participating in a fundraising function called Battle for the Brian in which he made himself up to look like Christina Aguilera for his performance of “Lady Marmalade.”

The event managed to not only raise $250,000 but some eyebrows from the townsfolk.

Watchful residents on Facebook were not happy with mayor’s decision, New Now Next says some posts called it “gross,” and “sick.” Another said, “As a mayor, I think there’s other things that he could do to get a message out there.”

But Mayor Easterling has no regrets and gives many reasons why he went to werk.

“I try to put the fun in fundraiser,” Easterling told WSBTV. “I have 250,000 reasons why I did it.”

Not everyone was so quick with negative judgment, some were very supportive on social media, “I love it! What a great and caring Mayor! Kennesaw is lucky to have him!” tweeted Joyce Vorholt King.

This isn’t the first time Easterling, who took office in 2016, donned a costume in public. And it might not be his last.

“That was my performance: over the top,” he told 11 Alive. “[I wanted to] get people’s attention and say, ’Hey look, if I can do this, you can too.'”

He said the audience was having a great time, “They were so loud, they were louder than the music. I couldn’t hear the music.”

Easterling, who is a Navy veteran and active in the local Methodist church with his wife and step-children, says people should try to enjoy life a little bit more.

“Everything is already so tough—why make it even harder?” he said. “There’s already enough negativity in the world. Let’s move forward, let’s have a little bit of fun and let’s raise awareness.”
