Company says the edit is not related to couple's reports of online homophobia.
Popular potato specialty company McCain recently ran an ad which focused on the many different kinds of families who use their products.
One featured couple was married dads Lee and Mat Samuels-Camozzi and their 19-month-old son.
But in a recently edited version of that 60-second commercial, the couple will no longer be present.
A spokesperson for McCain said the omission of the family had nothing to do with reports of homophobic abuse they received online after the ad first aired. In fact, the edited version was made before the full one.
“Our campaign is all about celebrating the diversity of family life and not everybody’s a normal family,” said the spokesperson. “There’s only so much you can say in 30 seconds. We’re still promoting them, they’re in the posters and we’ve got them on social media.”
The couple told the Daily Record that they received disturbing messages from people after the initial commercial.
“One of the most hurtful compared us to perverts, saying, ’Whatever next, society accepting pedophiles?'” Lee said. “We are shocked this kind of attitude exists in the 21st century. We’re proud of our little family and we have nothing to be ashamed of.”
Despite these reports, McCain and the couple say they have also received an overwhelming amount of support thanks to the spot.
