The singer and actress is sensitive to her relative's gender identity and fans took notice.
Jennifer Lopez was very proud of her younger relative who was accepted into the Global Young Leaders Conference, but that is not why the LGBT community is giving her accolades.
Lopez posted on Instagram about Brendan, her sister’s child, and how proud she was to see the youngster achieve such an accomplishment.
But her followers noticed more than pride in her text, she also used gender neutral pronouns:
“This is Brendan my sister Leslie's second child!! They were the one person selected to represent their school at #globalyoungleadersconference in Washington DC!!!
And I couldn't be more proud!!!
Her use of “they” and “their” seem to indicate that the singer understands and respects the teen’s identity without making that the central point.
Recognized by eagle-eyed readers, many post congratulatory words to JLo and Brendan.
You and Brendan ROCK @jlo !!"
"Pronouns for the win," and "YESSSSSSSSSSS @jlo THEY are lucky to have a great support system."
However, leave it to instigator and alt-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos to inject unsolicited disrespect:
"Is it a boy or a girl?" he wrote.
Of course the point Ms. Lopez was trying to make, besides the power of family, was that it doesn’t matter who you are; everyone should be respected and recognized in their own way.
