Jim Winsor’s Out & About: For the first time in 17 years, no vacancies on the 1000 block of University

The south side of the 1000 block of University Avenue is generally recognized as the epicenter of the gay nightlife community in Hillcrest. Two of the largest gay clubs in the city, Flicks and Rich’s, reside there, as well as the gay friendly coffee house Lestat’s Hillcrest.

Many other gay friendly establishments, such as Gossip Grill and Uptown Tavern, are just a stone’s throw away. In other words, this is the general area gays and lesbians from all over San Diego county travel to every weekend, to begin their weekly ritual of nocturnal socialization.

Today, two new restaurants are opening on the 1000 block: Bo-Beau Hillcrest and Tacos Libertad. And with those openings, a milestone will have been achieved: For the first time in over 17 years, every storefront on the block will have an open and active business concern, thriving within them.

Since the closure of Euphoria Coffee House in early 2000, there has always been one or two shuttered storefronts on this iconic block of ours. But today, every vacancy is filled!

From east to west, the list goes as follows: Mayer Reprographics, Rich’s Nightclub, Lestat’s Hillcrest, Lockdown, Torreon Importers, Cody’s Home + Gift, Bo-Beau Hillcrest, Tacos Libertad, Flicks, Wonderful and Wild, and Ace Hardware.

And the north side of the block (where the HUB shopping center is located) is also doing well, with the recently opened Whistling Duck Tavern across the street, and the soon-to-be-opened Cyclebar just above it.

Divas at Rich’s

And if you’re on this busy busy block tomorrow (Friday), be sure to check out Rich’s for a special edition of Divas. This week they will be having a fundraiser for the Trans Family Support Services, and the evening will feature performances by Fuddie Fontasia Lewis, Vancie Vega, Kickxy Vixen-Styles, Landa Plenty (Santio Cupon), Vanity Jones, Dayamis Styles, Lolita Von Teese (Justin Jeremy Sannes), along with special guest Sasha Colby.

Doors open at 7 pm, and show time is at 8 pm sharp. For table reservation and seating please contact Robert at 619-817-9926.

Overdrive at Spin Nightclub

This Saturday night, get ready for another installment of Overdrive at Spin Nightclub. This month will see the return of DJ Nina Flowers to the booth; she’ll be joined by local favorite DJ Drew G and the debut of DJ Mateo Segade.

Cover is free before 11 pm, with a $5 Svedka Vodka happy hour from 10 pm to midnight.

San Diego Pride Military Contingent Fundraiser at Uptown Tavern

On Sunday, Uptown Tavern will be playing host to a brunch fundraiser for the military contingent at this year’s San Diego Pride parade. There will be a silent auction and raffle, with the proceeds going to buy t-shirts for the parade marchers.

Incidentally, the group is still registering active duty personnel and veterans that would like to join in the contingent, just click here to sign up.

Jackie Beat at Martinis Above Fourth

And finally, on Tuesday you’ll see me for sure at Martinis Above Fourth, for the return to town of one of my all-time favorite performers, Jackie Beat:

“Are you ready for the trashiest tunes, the dirtiest ditties, the most-scandalous songs? Then you’re in the mood for… THE VERY WORST OF JACKIE BEAT! Classless classics & naughty new numbers by everyone’s favorite legendary, larger-than-life drag diva. Doors open at 6pm; show time is 8 pm.”
