The gay singer/songwriter has a soothing vocal talent that comforts the soul.
Matt Alber’s music has been described by The New York Times as having “beautiful, treacherous and emotional” abilities.
He will bring those transformative qualities to the stage at Martinis Above Fourth on Monday, April, 3.
The Portland-based singer/songwriter is in the middle of his tour, promoting his fourth studio album Wind Sand Stars.
He has been compared to Rufus Wainwright, Iron & Wine and John Grant.
But you may remember one of his more popular songs, 2008’s “End of the World,” made viral on Logo’s Click List.
In 2012, he totally reconstructed Whitey Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” giving it a mellow, love song vibe with a slight country twist.
As an openly gay singer, he also didn’t change the pronouns in his melodic and atmospheric update to the Houston original.
It’s in his ability to connect with the audience on a poetic level that garnered him an invitation to perform at the highly revered New York American Songbook Series in 2014.
The United States State Department appointed him as musical ambassador to Russia, Hungary, and Kosovo.
Taking a hands-on role with the youth of Sudan, Africa, Alber taught recording arts and sciences to the budding talents of that country.
Television producers love his vocal abilities so much they incorporated some of his songs into mainstream network shows such as “The Fosters” and “Bones.”
The Grammys also took notice of Alber’s talents, awarding two golden statues to classical albums recorded at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch with the acapella men’s ensemble Chanticleer.
On the road since 2010, Alber is currently branching off into the world of documentary filmmaking. His focus in that medium will be highlighting stories of youth and human rights.
"An Evening With Matt Alber" will be on Monday, April, 3, 2017 at 8 pm at Martinis Above Fourth.
