SDGLN's social columnist and the community remembers Michael Calles.
As many of you are aware, we all lost a shining star last weekend with the death of Michael Calles, aka Giggles. He passed away in his sleep Friday night/Saturday morning, due to what the what the Medical Examiner has determined to be a heart attack.
In addition to being an immensely popular public figure in the nightlife industry here in Hillcrest, he was also my roommate. So, as you can imagine this tragedy has been particularly difficult for me to process.
My other roommate Kevin Gardner and I are greatly heartened, however, by the overwhelming outpouring of grief and love the community has shown this week.
I personally received numerous calls and texts offering condolences and support, and the past few days my Facebook has been literally transformed into Gigglesbook.
In addition, at the time I write this the GoFundMe page set up by Mo’s Universe on behalf of Michael’s family for memorial arrangements has raised nearly $9,000 of its goal of $10,000 … in only 3 days!
I also want to thank the Hillcrest Business Association for lowering the Hillcrest Pride Flag to half-staff in an informal ceremony on Sunday.
Given Michael’s work with the Amazing High Heel Race that helped fund the flag, the gesture was in my opinion particularly appropriate and I know greatly appreciated by his friends and family who were in attendance there that day.
There will be a larger community ceremony celebrating Michael’s life in coming days; as soon the details are worked out I will let you all know.
