BBC confirms that 80’s singer and LGBT activist George Michael has died, he was 53.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period,” said his publicist in a statement. “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”

The U.K. singer burst on to the American music scene in 1983 with friend Andrew Ridgeley in pop band Wham!

The duo scored many moderate hits on their debut album, but it was their song “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go!” on their second which made Michael a household name.

That same album, Make it Big, also contained the song "Careless Whisper" which solidified Michael's success as a solo artist.

The team eventually went their separate ways, but Michael had continued success as a solo singer with songs such as “Freedom” and “I Want Your Sex.”

The singer struggled with addiction problems throughout his career and even suffered through a public indecency charge.

Police say that they responded to Michael’s home in Oxfordshire, England, where they were treating his death as unexplained, but do not suspect foul play.

Reports say Michael, "passed away peacefully at home."
