Cityfest gets underway this weekend and a historic Hillcrest gay bar gets a name change
Hillcrest CityFest (aka Pride lite) is this coming Sunday! Not only will this daylong event bring us several streets full of artisans, vendors, a beer garden and great food, but when the sun goes down some of Hillcrest’s best DJs will be on stage, for an epic dance party under the Hillcrest sign.
Proceeds from CityFest go towards the upkeep of the Hillcrest sign and beautification projects in Hillcrest.
CityFest Kick-Off Party at Rich’s
In a way, CityFest will actually begin a night early this year, with the CityFest Kick-Off Party at Rich’s. DJ Taj will be spinning the main room, while DJ K-Swift will be in the front room. Both will also be on stage at the big event the next day; perhaps they’ll give us a taste of we can expect?
Four Year Anniversary Luau Party at Uptown Tavern
But CityFest is not the only big event happening this Sunday. Uptown Tavern will also be celebrating it’s 4-year anniversary with a big Luau Party:
“Come shake your coconuts with our special guest host Ginger Minj, DJ, and go go dancers! Stop by our photo booth and take home a souvenir print! $3 you-call-its plus complimentary appetizers!”
Brass Rail reopens as The Rail
Another big event is coming up this Friday. The newly remodeled Brass Rail will reopen to the public, rechristened as simply The Rail. It will host the return of their weekly Hip Hop Fridayz, with hip hop music provided by DJ E-Flex.
Lestat’s Hillcrest opened this week
And finally one last bit of interesting nightlife news: Lestat’s Coffee House has opened a Hillcrest branch, on University right smack dab between Rich’s and Flicks.
Some of you may remember, that same property was the site of Euphoria Coffee House, which before it’s closing in 2000 was actually a nightlife hotspot. Catering to a large crowds of boys who generally were not quite 21, and hence not quite old enough for entry into either of the popular gay bars on either side of it, the situation led to an interesting afterhours social dynamic on that block that many recall with some fondness.
So those days may return, but not right away. Lestat’s Hillcrest hours of operation are currently 6 am to midnight, 7 days a week; but I have been told that those will be extended to 24 hours after about a month or so.
San Diego DIVAS
Those dignitaries of drag will hit the stage at Rich's nightclub on Friday night. Vanity Jones, Landa Plenty, Kickxy Vixen-Styles along with special guests Jazmyn Simone-Echelon and Cassidy Richards will work every inch of Rich's signature LED stage for a night of camp and craziness in DIVAS. The show starts at 7 pm sharp.
