Jim Winsor’s Out & About: Guide to Hillcrest Halloween, Part I

I hope you guys like lots of candy, face paint, fake boobs and fake blood, because this year we have a massively extended Halloween to celebrate!

This is due to Halloween falling on a Friday in 2014. As a result, Halloween Saturday gets bumped ahead a week, partly so as not to conflict with another much celebrated related holiday, Dia de los Muertos (which falls on Sunday, Nov. 2), and partly because Halloween is widely considered the gays most favorite holiday (besides Pride), and as a result we just can’t wait to don our often “slutty” reinventions of various costumes, and begin partying it up.

So, Halloween basically begins this weekend and continues through next weekend. As a result, I’m dividing my annual Halloween Guide into two parts: This week I’ll cover Halloween events from today (Thursday) until Wednesday, then next week I’ll cover the same from Thursday onward.

Here’s what we got going this week:

Thursday, Oct. 23

6 pm: Ninth annual Harvest Howl at the San Diego Central Library

Friday, Oct. 24

5 pm: Knights of Leather 2015 at Numbers

“Hillcrest’s one and only Halloween street party is taking place on October 25, 2014. Join us if you dare for a scare! This spooky celebration will take place on Normal Street between University Ave. and Harvey Milk Street. The events of the evening will include ‘fang-tastic’ live entertainment and spine chilling décor! New this year, Nightmare on Normal Street will feature an all ages fright zone and soda bar.”

6 pm: Leather Fetish Ball 2014: Freakshow at the Sunset Temple

“Join us for an evening of fabulous entertainers, choice music and of course, a love for leather. It's the second annual Leather Fetish Ball in San Diego California. CareFusion Silent Art Auction at Wangs North Park

And we have one big non-Halloween event this week to point out, and that is the CareFusion Silent Art Auction at Wangs North Park taking place tonight from 7-10 pm. It promises to be “a night of beautiful artwork, appetizers, beverages, music, mingling” all in support of the Trevor Project.

Tickets are $30 presale or $40 at the door.
