SYDNEY, Australia -- Troye Sivan, famous for playing the young Wolverine to fellow Australian Hugh Jackman in the "X-Men" franchise, came out this week on his YouTube channel.
Sivan, 18, told his family on Aug. 7, 2010 that he is gay and told his huge YouTube fan base on the same day in 2013.
"This has probably the most nervous I've been in my entire life," he says on the "Coming Out" video uploaded on Aug. 7, 2013.
"I want you guys to know that I’m gay,' Sivan says in the video. "I know some people are going to have a problem with this, and I know that this could kind of change everything for me, but it shouldn’t have to. And that’s why I’m making this video."
The teenager said he wanted other youths who may be questioning their sexuality that "it gets better," echoing the Dan Savage-inspired message. The 8-minute video was conversational as Sivan looked directly into his webcam and told his fans what it was like to grow up knowing that you are different, not knowing for sure what that meant, and then finally coming to the recognition that he liked boys.
As of Thursday afternoon, the YouTube video had been seen by 279,438 people and gotten 97,097 thumbs up and 515 thumbs down from his followers.
