Diversionary Theatre adds Sondheim musical to its season lineup

SAN DIEGO -- Diversionary Theatre has added Stephen Sondheim’s "Marry Me A Little" to its 2013 season.

The musical revue, directed by James Vásquez and featuring Stewart Calhoun, Jacob Caltrider, Megan Carmitchel and Mitzi Michaels, will start previews on Aug. 29 with an official opening of Sept. 7. The show is scheduled to run through Sept. 29.

"Justin Love," a new musical previously scheduled to open at that time, has been has been rescheduled to spring 2014.

From the master songwriter of our time, Sondheim, comes a timely exploration of love, loneliness, marriage and relationships. Using a treasure trove of songs originally written for "Follies," "A Little Night Music," "Company" and other Sondheim favorites, the musical tells the story of two lonely young people who dream and ponder their lives in and out of love.

“This decision comes directly from current events,” said John E. Alexander, Diversionary's executive director. “James (Vásquez, the director) has been working on this idea for years. With the upcoming expected Supreme Court decisions, the theme of this year’s San Diego LGBT Pride, and the growing acceptance of marriage equality, it is clear Diversionary needed to do this now. As much as we are excited about bringing 'Justin Love' to San Diego, we really felt we needed to be part of what will certainly be a summer-long conversation about love and marriage."

As our community embraces and celebrates marriage equality for all, this is the perfect time for Diversionary to explore relationships from different perspectives. Our production of "Marry Me A Little" will present the show in repertory, with the story told from the alternating perspectives of two men, two women, and a man and a woman, depending on which performance is attended. On Saturday, Sept. 21, all three versions will be offered.

The new musical, "Justin Love" is a new-fashioned Hollywood fantasy musical about an idealistic Hollywood assistant and the A-Lister he coaxes out of the closet. When the two try to love “like real people,” the age-old story of fame, secrets and love is upended in sometimes biting and often touching ways. After a critically acclaimed and extended run at the Celebration Theatre in LA, "Justin Love" comes to Diversionary for its continued journey towards stardom. It will now begin performances in April 2014.
