DVD review: Lesbian twist powers psychological thriller, "Side Effects" | VIDEO

Girl-on-girl action spices up “Side Effects,” arriving on Blu-ray and DVD on Tuesday, May 21.

Starring Rooney Mara and Catherine Zeta-Jones along with Jude Law and Channing Tatum, “Side Effects” is another suspenseful thriller from Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic,” “Contagion”).

This one is another roller coast ride of intrigue and suspense, with more twists than a bag of pretzels.

Emily (Rooney Mara) is suffering from severe anxiety and depression after her husband Martin (Channing Tatum) is sent to prison on insider trading, and her condition only worsens upon his release. She turns to psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) for help, and he prescribes an experimental drug that causes adverse results, including sleep walking. He also consults with Emily’s former psychiatrist, Dr. Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones).

The screenplay by Scott Z. Burns, who also co-produces the movie, is a devastating slam at Big Pharma and the widespread use – some would say overuse – of anti-depression drugs. Throw in a lesbian affair, a murder plot and a career assassination … and you have the foundation for a psychological thriller that will keep you glued to your seat until the shocking ending.
