SAN DIEGO -- The Black Storytellers of San Diego (BSSD) will be the special guests at the San Diego Women's Chorus's (SDWC) annual spring concert, taking place May 4-5.
Tickets are now available for the show, titled "Still We Rise."
The concert will offer a glimpse at women's legacy through story and song.
SDWC members say that their group is thrilled to be working again with BSSD, which is a dynamic group of women who promote storytelling and oral tradition through education and entertainment.
"Still We Rise" borrows from the black community's rich tradition of musical expression and social awareness to provide the musical base for the program, weaving together music and spoken word to create a magical event. The show will illustrate and illuminate how women have faced formidable barriers to equality and continue their climb to equality.
"Our previous collaboration with SDWC back in 2005 was a standout experience for us," said Dr. Annjennette McFarlin, president of BSSD."This upcoming performance will again be a unique coming together through literature and music. It is about sharing our experiences and emotions and that's what sisterhood is all about."
Known for its inspirational, thoughtful, entertaining and moving repertoire, SDWC will perform songs that speak to the universal themes of struggle, triumph, hope and love and BSSD will share powerful spoken word stories. The program will include Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire," Maya Angelou's "Still I Rise, "What About Love?" from the musical "The Color Purple," the African-American gospel "Keep Yo' Lamps," and an homage to poet and LGBT-activist Audre Lorde with "She Who Makes Her Meaning Clear (Gamba Adisa)."
BSSD's pieces will include "Alabama Centennial," a piece Dr. McFarlin describes as a "provocative message that spans all time."
Tickets to the show, which will take place at University Christian Church, are $15 for general admission, and $12 for seniors, military and children.
Ticket prices will increase if purchased at the door.
University Christian Church is located at 3900 Cleveland Ave. in Hillcrest.
