Jonathan Duffy and his “Shameless Self Promotion” videos are a hoot, but you know what? He’s incredibly talented, witty and funny, and his documentary about his life as Click “The Doctor’s Wife” in rural Australia is bound to become a cult classic.
The DVD is being released today by Guest House Films and includes a director’s commentary, deleted scenes and a couple of those “Shameless Self Promotion” videos.
Duffy and his partner, Dr. Vincent Cornelisse, make the difficult decision of leaving their family and friends in the Aussie capital city of Brisbane and head off to the tiny town of Mundubbera in the state of Queensland. The two city slickers depart with great trepidation for life as a country doctor and his “wife,” not knowing whether they would be accepted in a place without any gay culture.
The young couple decide to be open and honest from the start. Vinny candidly tells the local paper that he has a partner, Jonathan Duffy, so the word spread quickly among townspeople that a couple of gay boys were moving to Mundubbera.
Both the young couple and the townspeople have to confront their own stereotypes of each other. Jonathan, who also goes by Jono, quickly throws himself into community events and wins a grant to teach visual arts to children. The boys quickly win over the townspeople, and vice versa.
Funny, fascinating and heartwarming, the documentary showcases Duffy’s multiple talents as an actor, writer, director, editor, producer, composer and shill. It won an “Award of Excellence in Filmmaking” at the 2012 Canada International Film Festival and screened at the Mardi Gras Film Festival in Sydney.
The adventures of Jono and Vinny will continue as Duffy is working on “The Doctor’s Wife 2: Our Big Gay Country Wedding.” Can't wait to see it!
