SAN DIEGO -- It’s not that odd, really, that director Gus Van Sant is coming to San Diego.
After all, we’re the city of Comic-Con. We see Academy Award-winning directors like Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg, Steven Soderbergh and Francis Ford Coppola breeze through all the time.
What is curious, however, is that Van Sant will be here at the end of September, not for anything Con-related, but for the San Diego Film Festival (SDFF).
“Regional festivals are some of the best,” Van Sant said via telephone from his home in Portland, Ore. “I’ve gone to a lot of different festivals over the last 30 years, and the smaller ones are some of my favorites.”
Though there are plenty of small but beloved festivals in Telluride and TriBeCa, the one in San Diego has never had a high-profile reputation.
