SAN DIEGO -- The popular musical "Rent" is now playing through July 8 at the historical Birch North Park Theatre.
San Diego Musical Theatre is staging the Jonathan Larson show, which won the Pulitzer Prize for drma and the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score.
"Rent" is inspired by Puccini's "La Boheme," but is transported to modern times as a celebration of a community of young artists in downtown New York who are looking for love and success while struggling to make a mark on their world. The music is uplifting and heartbreaking, especially in its look at HIV and AIDS in the community.
SDMT warns patrons that "Rent" is for mature audiences and contains adult themes and language.
