Pool party season is upon us, and there's no better sign of this than the first Guys Like Us (GLU) Pool Party of 2012, coming up July 14 at a private estate in Mission Hills.
These GLU parties have traditionally been some of the best and most eagerly anticipated pool parties locally. You can view photos from some of the previous events here. Fundraisers for their AIDS Walk team, the GLU has raised thousands of dollars for the cause over the years.
"The pool parties have now taken on a life of their own," said GLU party organizer Chris Benavides. "The parties are a true fundraiser for AIDS Walk with people of all colors! We're very proud of that."
This year DJ James Adams is spinning, and as in past years food and drink is included in the price of admission ($20 in advance, $25 at the door).
Advance tickets can be purchased on the GLU website. And like I said, this is only the first GLU Pool Party of the year ... another one featuring DJ Marcel is scheduled for Aug. 18.
Rick Cervantes' birthday extravaganza
Rick Cervantes, Hillcrest socialite, activist and Mo’s Universe marketing and public relations coordinator, will be celebrating his 26th birthday this Friday, June 22.
His Bowtie, Booze and Beer birthday bash will kick off at Gossip Grill from 6 to 8 pm, followed by a pit stop at the new Hillcrest Brewing Company from 8 to 10 pm, and finish up at Eden until they kick us out at 2 am (or sooner).
And yes, a bow tie is a must for all party-goers. Shirts and pants are optional, however. Just kidding!
San Diego Pride Festival DJ schedule set
San Diego Pride has announced the DJ schedule for the two-day Pride Festival.
There will be five dance tents this year (hip-hop, garden dance party, high NrG, Latin and country), with a mix of great local talent (including DJs Marcel, Will Z, Kiki, Van Kiss and others) plus some out-of-town DJs whose names I actually recognize as well. Despite an eyebrow-raising decision or two (no DJ Will Z in the hip- hop tent?) the overall lineup looks pretty solid for a Pride Festival.
Keep in mind that this is in addition to the entertainment on the main stage, including headliners Kelly Rowland at 9:30 pm Saturday, and Natasha Bedingfield at 7:30 pm Sunday.
Freebirds open until late late late on weekends now
Freebirds World Burrito Hillcrest is entering the after-the-clubs-close munchy market ... beginning this weekend when they will be open until 2:30 am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
It joins other dining establishments in the area catering to this market, including Hong Kong, Asian Bistro, Ciro's, the hot dog cart next to Rich's, etc. Which is good, because now we have an upscale Mexican alternative to La Fuente and La Posta when we emerge from the bars at 2 am.
This week's events
There's lots of fun stuff going on this weekend, most notably on Saturday. We have three major events that day:
First, Baja Betty's will be hosting its always outrageous White Trash Prom beginning at 2 pm.
Then a bit later, starting with a free buffet at 7 pm, Redwing Bar & Grill in North Park will be celebrating its 6th anniversary with TONS of live entertainment starting at 8:30 pm. Pearl is hosting the entertainment, and performers include Lala Too, Boy Shakira, La Fierce, Empress Norma, Regina Styles, Wilfred P, Josh, Erin Baker and Niko.
Finally, later that night Rich's gets transformed into an aquatic paradise for its colorful and creative Atlantis - The Club Under the Sea party. Like I said, it's going to be an eventful Saturday!
9:30 pm | Voice of Pride at Cheers
6:30 pm | All in Pride Celebration at The W Hotel
4 pm | Tequila Club at Betty's, Featuring Sino
