SAN DIEGO -- Urban Mo’s bartender Michael “Giggles” Calles will represent San Diego at the third annual Palm Springs Summer Splash Cocktail Challenge, taking place Thursday.
Calles, the first runner-up in a local competition earlier this month, will compete against bartenders from 11 cities with his “Blue Palm” cocktail, made from Stoli Blueberi, Blue Curacao, Triple Sec, Sweet & Sour, and lemon/line soda with a blueberry, cherry and orange garnish.
Edward Camarillo of San Diego was originally selected to compete in Palm Springs after winning the competition by just one point, but Camarillo was not able to attend the final competition in Palm Springs.
In Palm Springs, Calles will represent Urban Mo's Bar & Grill, Baja Betty's, Gossip Grill and the soon to open Hillcrest Brewing Company.
The competition, which is sponsored by the Desert Gay Tourism Guild, Here Media, and local sponsors San Diego Pix Magazine and San Diego Gay & Lesbian News, is organized as a promotion to bring together hotels, restaurants, bars, retailers, promoters and entertainment venues in the Greater Palm Springs area. The “Summer Splash” includes a series of events, which culminate with the Cocktail Challenge taking place at 6 pm May 31 at Hunters Nightclub.
Calles, who works as a host trainer at Mo’s, is a popular staff member who loves creating new drinks for his customers. A San Diego native, Calles has also been instrumental in organizing the Amazing High Heel Race, which raises funds for the Hillcrest Rainbow Flag Project and other projects to beautify Hillcrest.
Heading to Palm Springs today, Calles hopes to represent San Diego well and bring home the winning title. “I’m winning this because it’s my universe, b****!,” Calles said.
