Kevin Keller's gay wedding issue of “Life With Archie” is sold out

Despite a boycott call by anti-gay group One Million Moms, the issue of “Life With Archie” featuring the marriage of military veterans Kevin Keller and his African-American boyfriend Clay has sold out, Archie Comics reports.

Conservative groups such as Fox News also criticized Archie Comics for delving into contemporary social issues, and promoted the boycott call against retailers such as Toys-R-Us that carry the comic books. The retailers resisted the pressure.

According to the story line, Kevin was wounded in Iraq and while in the hospital fell in love with his doctor (Clay).

Archie Comics has boldly embraced equality issues in recent years. It introduced Keller in “Veronica” in September 2010 as an Iraq war veteran who comes out to his friends in Riverdale. Keller became the first openly gay character in the history of Archie Comics.

In June 2011, Keller headlined his own miniseries of four episodes that focused on his history and his struggles growing up.

This year, the character will get his own series, “Kevin Keller,” which will follow the character during his high school years.

The groundbreaking depiction of an openly gay comic character has brought widespread praise for Archie Comics from groups like Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
