The big nightlife news of the week has to be the recently announced partnership between Eden San Diego and West Coast mega-promoter Jeffrey Sanker, which you can read all about in a great article by Ben Cartwright here.
It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out. I think what may take place is the Sanker name may possibly bring LA boys down to San Diego for these events, thus bringing a little extra variety to our usual weekend crowds. I think this would be great; I, for one, have a bunch of LA friends I would not mind having an excuse to see down here more often.
And I imagine this will work both ways too, with more San Diego boys energized about Sanker events in LA and Palm Springs. So, win-win for everyone involved.
Anyways, the first three joint events have been announced: we have a "Fire and Ice" party on September 24th featuring Liz Primo, Katrina OPM and Alex Cohen; a Halloween party on Oct. 29 (which will be Halloween Saturday, so that should be interesting!); and a birthday event for Sanker on Dec. 3. And for 2012 ... well, I guess we'll have to wait and see! But I can foresee some intriguing possibilities ...
Toast to Hillcrest
Tonight (Thursday) we have two great annual fundraising events going on.
The first is Toast to Hillcrest, the annual double-decker foodie bus throughout the gayborhood hosted by Ben Cartwright and Ricky Cervantes. $25 bucks gets you access to the bus, and a wristband that'll allow you to freely sample over 35 participating Hillcrest restaurants (marked by red balloons) the bus will be constantly looping by.
This event runs from 5:30 to 8 pm, and proceeds will benefit the Hillcrest History Guild.
Mama's Kitchen Wine Tasting at Bourbon Street
The second big charity event tonight is the annual Mama's Kitchen Wine Tasting at Bourbon Street, from 6 to 9 pm.
Tickets are $65 at the door, and will get you eclectic wine tasting pours throughout the evening, a "lucky ticket" silent auction featuring indulgent gift packages from San Diego's premier dining and entertainment venues, sumptuous tray-passed hors d'oeuvres and more.
There'll also be a wine bottle ring toss - bring 5 items to donate to the Mama's Kitchen Pantry (cereal, jelly, canned tuna or salmon) and get 3 free rings to toss.
FilmOut's Opening Night Party at Top of the Park
Friday is the start of this year's FilmOut San Diego LGBT Film Festival. After the main feature ("Going Down In La-La Land") at 7:30 pm, the crowd will be heading over to the official after-party at Top of the Park at 10 pm. It's a great place to hob-nob with some of the actors and directors in attendance; the director Casper Andreas and lead cast members Matthew Ludwinski and Allison Lane of "La-La Land" will be there to meet and mingle.
MPower Celebrate the Summer pool party
This week's featured pool party is the MPower Celebrate the Summer pool party on Saturday, from noon to 5 pm, at the Serra Mesa home of Kevin Beiser and Dan Mock. You can RSVP for more info at email@example.com
The Barracks at Numbers
Then on Saturday night, get ready for the The Barracks: Don't Ask Don't Tell Military Party at Numbers. This will have a bit of a on the usual theme at these sorts of military parties, in that you'll get to join an appropriate "troop" using colored dog tags: tops get blue dog tags, bottoms get red, and versatiles get yellow.
The night also features music by DJ John Joseph, and a special performance by Medina Monet and the Happy Feet dancers. Cover is $7, or free with military ID before 11 pm; part of the proceeds will go to benefit the Veteran's Wall of Honor Project.
Summer Splash AIDS Walk Fundraiser at Martinis Above Fourth
And on Sunday we have the annual Summer Splash Party at Martinis Above Fourth, from 2 to 6 pm. This is Team MA4's annual AIDS Walk fundraiser, featuring live entertainment by Olive Onemore and Tiffany Tanqueray, door prizes, opportunity drawings, a silent auction, and Rufskin swimwear models ... lots of Rufskin swimwear models! To see what I mean, check out photos of past years' events here.
