COMMENTARY: Another batch of Louisiana crazy

So, if you live in Louisiana and you’re single or you’re a same-gender couple and you’re thinking of having a child by surrogacy, you better do it now while it’s legal to do so.

Senate Bill (SB) 162 would allow only a married heterosexual (one man and one woman) couple to be able to use the services of a surrogate mother. Go ahead and read that sentence again, but know that you read it correctly the first time.

Does this seem a bit restrictive and a bit mean-spirited to you? And the thing is – this mean-spirited craziness passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both chambers. So Democrats and Republicans have decided that it’s perfectly fine to disenfranchise single people and gay people.

The thing is – people who resort to using a surrogate are people who cannot have children on their own, hence they hire the surrogate. This bill makes sure that gays and lesbians and unmarried people who really want children and cannot have them – will never have their children in the state of Louisiana.

Where are the people of Louisiana? Are they supportive of all this hate? Do they not understand that these politicians work for them? They were put in office to do the will of the people, not the will of whatever or whoever they believe to be right. I don’t want to believe that this really is the will of the majority of the people in Louisiana.

Meanwhile in Nebraska, the state Judiciary Committee voted last Friday to advance a bill (LB 385) that would change current state law regarding gays, lesbians and unrelated, unmarried adults who live together on becoming foster parents. Currents law bans said people from fostering children.

LB 385 would allow gay and lesbian couples who are in a well-established relationship and are related to the child to serve as foster parents. It’s restrictive – but – it’s a start …

All these laws – all these restrictions – all these rules – when all gays and lesbians want to do is raise children in a home filled with love and affection instead of having some of these children have to live in a group home or on the street or god-knows where else.

Will there ever be a time when love is really the only thing that matters when raising children? Will these discriminating, mean-spirited Democrats and Republicans ever realize that the only thing a child really needs to succeed are parents who love them and support them and totally have their back as they make their way in the craziness of life? Why don’t politicians understand that these kids need parents and a home and security and love?

And finally, will they ever realize that it doesn’t matter if the parents are married or single or black or white or gay or straight or Christian or Muslim, or young or old or whatever. Love is simply – love.
