Life, liberty, and the pursuit of Socialism

Karl Marx once said “Democracy is the road to Socialism.”

I think he may have been right. Lately, Marx’s sentiment has become abundantly obvious in our own community. In particular, groups like the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (SAME) have blurred the lines between standing for liberty and pushing for radical leftist political change.

The day of closing arguments in the federal Proposition 8 trial, several San Diegans gathered to demonstrate at the federal building downtown in a rally planned in part by SAME. On the podium at the rally: the words, “socialistworker.org.” Socialistworker.org represents an unabashed and radical movement to change our government from a constitutional republic to a leftist, big-government Socialist state. SAME’s website also contains deliberate ties to Socialist ideology.

The blatant link to a dissident Socialist movement from gay rights groups bothers me, and it should bother you, too, because Socialism and freedom cannot co-exist.

The proof is in basic economics. Socialists appeal to people because they promise to give something: money, entitlements, education, health care, rights, land, food, safety, etc. The trade off, however is they get to control those things: how you spend your money, their version of history in classes, what kind of health care you get, what your rights really mean, what you can do on your land, what kind of food you can eat, and so on.

Essentially, the Socialist agenda is to give the government complete control to “take care of us.” This sounds like a great idea. And it seems to work, until the economy (like ours) faces a downturn. Then, the government can’t afford to provide anymore. So what do Socialists do (besides protest budget cuts)? Well, history shows that in extreme cases (like Hitler) the government just exterminates those who cost too much.

If this remotely troubles you, then you probably believe in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence and you are someone who thinks our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are inherent and come from our Creator, not from the government.

Socialists, however, do not believe in the Constitution. They believe that the government (not the Creator) provides rights, freedoms, and protection. Socialists promise Utopia, which they attempt to create by spreading the wealth around to all. Essentially, they take from the people who produce and give to the people who do not produce, all under the guise of establishing freedom and making life better for all.
(By the way, at a basic level, all societies are based on production and how production is treated. Capitalism, for instance allows producers to keep what they produce.  Fascism, Socialism, and Communism take from producers and give the output from production to other people or to the government. But, I digress.)
History proves that Socialism fails miserably. This is because fundamentally, Socialists do not believe in liberty at all, it just looks like they do. In fact, they end up destroying everything they get their hands on, eventually, literally destroying millions of people. Russia (Stalin), Germany (Hitler), China (Mao), & the USSR are concrete examples of nations destroyed by some form of Socialism.
I know all this sounds like something Sarah Palin or some scary Republican would say. And I am certainly not endorsing unregulated, right-wing Capitalism, because that doesn't work either. But at the end of the day, the only thing that separates us from Cuba, Venezuela, China, or Russia is our Constitution and our respect for the process of the rule of law. We are witnessing the destruction of both of those, and when that happens, it will not end well for us lovers of liberty.

So why the diatribe on Socialism in a LGBT community news website? Well, I find the connection between Socialism and LGBT rights a little strange and completely inconsistent with history.

Socialists talk a good game about rights and freedoms, but it's the same strategy they have used against minorities for decades. They pretend to support equality in order to garner votes, but they keep minority groups in poverty or second-class status to maintain control. (Just Google the “Cloward-Piven strategy” if you don’t believe me.)
The Socialist rhetoric from groups like SAME should not set well with anyone who really cares about the American way. And the brazen links between gay rights and Socialism only serve to exacerbate the demise of freedom in the long run.

As the LGBT movement continues to evolve, let’s remember this is still America; and we still have a Constitution and three branches of government and all that stuff you learned about in 4th grade history class. Let’s not be hijacked by radical extremists seeking to undermine it.

Support only LGBT organizations and politicians who honor the very process of freedom that has kept America free for longer than our founding fathers even predicted was possible. Support only groups who push Constitutional principles, instead of Socialism.

Because Socialism is not, never has been, and never will be the answer to any of the problems our community faces.
