Update from The Center: Food is a human right

At The Center, we believe the right to food is a human right and, during the COVID-19 pandemic, have seen an increased demand from our community for our Food Programs and Services. With the ongoing loss of income, jobs, and resources, we have served many in our community who never thought they would need these resources. But we are here for them, and everyone, and welcome all who are in need, warmly, with respect, and in community.

This past fiscal year, The Center's Food Programs provided over 15,000 service visits including Food Bank recipients and those receiving Food Resources including grocery gift cards, holiday food, non-perishable food deliveries, Nourishing the Community meal partnerships, and meals provided to Center clients. And importantly, every Food Service that The Center provides is free.

We know that, although many Center offerings are taking place via Zoom, these important programs must take place in person, so we have implemented safety protocols including masking and social distancing for our walk-up clients at Food Banks; we also offer a contactless drive-thru where clients can drive up and food is loaded directly into their cars, and contactless delivery for those who need it. Our Food Programs include:

  • The Neighborhood Food Distribution, part of the Community Cares Project of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, is free and open to all. Held on the first Tuesday of each month from 8am - 10am, the next Neighborhood Food Bank is Tuesday, November 2, 2021.
  • The Senior Food Bank, held in partnership with Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, is free and open to low-income seniors 60 and older. Held on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 1pm - 3pm, the next Senior Food Bank is Tuesday, November 23, 2021.
  • The Non-Perishables Home Delivery Program, in partnership with United Way Worldwide, 2-1-1, and DoorDash, is free and open to all with sign-up required. Deliveries of pantry staples right to your door are held every Tuesday between 2:30pm - 4:30pm with one-time, bi-monthly or monthly deliveries.
  • We are busily planning our food resources for the holidays, including our Thanksgiving food giveaway, as well as our annual event, Come Home For The Holidays. We’ll be sure to update you with all details, and keep an eye on our E-news and social media for updates.

Again, we believe that no one should go hungry and are here for everyone in our community. If you, or someone you know, needs access to food, The Center is here for you! Please reach out to Sarah at 619.692.2077 x 214 or smerkbenitez@thecentersd.org

One statistic drives home how important our Food Programs are: 67% of those who were hospitalized with serious cases of COVID-19 were malnourished, making our food programs truly life-saving. If you are in a position to donate to support these critical Food Programs for our community, please visit our website. Together, we can make a difference to those experiencing food insecurity and hunger.
