The Williams Community Assistance Foundation was created to manage these community service programs.
The organization that operates the heavily utilized weekly "Take What You Need" food distribution, Williams Community Assistance Foundation, has announced that their board of directors has launched two new programs: "A Step Forward" and the "Pet Food Pantry."
"A Step Forward" is will provide shoes to those in need, and the organization is collecting new or gently used shoes. The shoe collection is taking place now through June 30 with collections taking place Tuesdays through Sundays from 9 am to 3 pm. Shoes can be dropped off at Fair@44, located at 4350 El Cajon Blvd.
The Pet Food Pantry, in conjunction with Take What You Need, will provide free dog food, cat food, and kitty litter to community members with pets every 1st and 3rd Tuesday from 10 am to 2 pm, in conjunction with the food distribution. Donations are welcome.
Take What You Need was founded by local community member Darnelle Williams in May 2020 by setting up a table outside his home with food items on it and a sign that said "Take What You Need." He started the program after seeing how many of his neighbors and community members were in need of basic nourishment during the pandemic. The program grew into a weekly event and now serves hundreds of people each week.
