The yearly tradition commemorates World AIDS Day and raises funds for the agency's services.
Mama’s Kitchen will host its 29th annual Tree of Life Candlelight Vigil and Tree Lighting Ceremony tonight at 6 pm. The nonprofit partners with San Diego Pride, the County of San Diego's HIV Planning Group, and the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus for this free virtual event sponsored by Village Hillcrest.
Tree of Life is considered San Diego County’s premier event to commemorate World AIDS Day to honor those affected by AIDS, as well as recognize the ongoing leadership efforts made to end the worldwide epidemic.
In addition to the tree lighting and candlelight vigil, attendees will enjoy holiday tunes from the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus and opera singer DeAndre Simmons, as well as remarks from notable government officials. Attendees can also dedicate a heart ornament in memory of a loved one, to honor a friend, or for a message of support. Heart purchases can include a message of support in the comments section upon checkout. Mama’s Kitchen staff and volunteers will write messages on a white paper heart that will be placed in a heart ornament and hung on the tree in the center of the Village Hillcrest Plaza on the night of the event and throughout the whole month of December.
Ornaments can be purchased online prior to the event or that evening and personalized with a message. The cost is $15 each or two for $25. Proceeds from ornament purchases benefit Mama’s Kitchen.
