Community members will have the opportunity to donate food that will directly benefit San Diegans in need.
The Take What You Need food distribution, which was started as a grassroots efforts this past May and has grown into a weekly community-wide effort, is hosting its first food drive in advance of the holidays.
Every Tuesday, Take What You Need sets up at Fair@44 in City Heights and offers a "no questions asked" food distribution to any one who stops by. Organizers say that many communtiy members have asked how they can help, and the upcoming food drive will provide an opportunity.
A drive-up food drive will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, and Sunday, Nov. 22 from 9 am to 12 noon both days in the parking lot of the San Diego LGBT Community Center. Donors simply need to load up their trunk with whatever perishable items they wish to donate, drive up, and a volunteer will retrieve the donations.
Organizers say they are particularly looking for canned vegetables, beans, rice, soup, pasta, oatmeal, cereal, canned tuna, and canned chicken.
"Whether you drop off 1 can or 100 cans your donation will literally put food on your neighbors table," said organizers in a Faceook post.
The Center is located at 3909 Centre St. in Hillcrest.
