San Diego fund for LGBT global refugees established

San Diego has been the destination of many LGBT immigrants seeking safety because in their countries being gay or trans can result in harsh punishments including torture and even death.

People who live in Uganda, Russia, Congo, Nigeria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Iran, Somalia, Guyana, Yemen and many others are subject to anti-homosexual laws which are implemented to their fullest extent.

Keep in mind the list doesn't include countries where homosexuality is legal but officials turn a blind eye to hate crimes against the LGBT population.

The San Diego Center of Survivors of Tortue International has been assisting and helping LGBT refugees and asylum-seekers in San Diego County, and now a special fund has been established to help them further.

"The Bruce M. Abrams GLBT Torture Survivors Fund" was founded last year by City Commissioner Nicole M. Ramirez and the Imperial Court de San Diego with a $2,000 Grant.

Attorney Bruce M. Abrams has been an activist for the Jewish and LGBT community and countless social justice causes for well over thirty years. Currently, Abrams is the Chair of City of San Diego's International Affairs Board and is formerly a chair of the Human Relations Commission.

He has served on numerous national, state and local boards including the Anti-Defamation League, San Diego County's Social Service Advisory Board, San Diego Mediation Center, the National Gay Lesbian Transgender Task Force, Equality California and ACLU to name a few.

Friends of Bruce Abrams and the Imperial Court de San Diego are throwing Abrams a "Birthday Bash" this Thursday, July 26 from 6 pm to 9 pm at his residence located at 3120 2nd Ave. in Bankers Hill.

In Lieu of gifts, people are urged to make a donation to the Bruce M. Abrams Tortue Survivors Fund which will be administered by the Jewish Community Fund of San Diego.

"In naming this most needed and important Fund after Bruce Abrams we honor his decades of unselfish dedication to social justice and human rights of all people," stated City Commissioner Nicole M. Ramirez.
