A gay wedding at 30,000 feet with guest Jesse Tyler Ferguson | VIDEO

AUKLAND, New Zealand – Lots of amazing wedding stories have come out of New Zealand since same-gender marriage went into effect on Monday, but none may be more unusual than the first-ever gay nuptials onboard an Air New Zealand jet with a celebrity assist from “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Lynley Bendall and Ally Wanikau, a Kiwi couple who have been together almost 14 years, wed onboard a special Air New Zealand flight from Queenstown to Auckland in front of their three children (Javarn, 9, Maycee, 7, and Mikaere, 6, and Ally’s son Damon), family and friends. Ferguson and his husband Justin Mikita were participants in the wedding party as part of the airline promotion.

The lesbian couple exchanged pounamu (New Zealand greenstone) in place of traditional wedding band during the flight. After exchanging vows, the couple enjoyed the applause of fellow passengers, who celebrated with them with a champagne toast.

Ferguson and Mikita gifted the children with bowties from the collection by their charity, Tie The Knot, which raises money to support marriage-equality efforts.

Lynley says the couple have waited a long time to make their 13+ year union official and she’s ecstatic to be able to call herself a newlywed.

The video was produced by Air New Zealand.
