Family, friends believe victim killed because he was gay

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Police haven’t determined a motive, but family and friends believe a 50-year-old Shreveport man was killed because he was gay.

On Friday, Jock Maurice McKinney, who also goes by the name Valarie, lost his life in the 5600 block of Kennedy Drive, near Clear Horizons Apartments.

Calvin Wright, McKinney’s friend, said what makes the pain of the loss even worse is why he and others think the victim was killed.

“In my heart, I believe he is dead today because he was gay,” Wright, 38, said Tuesday as he stood near the makeshift memorial near where McKinney’s body was found. “Everybody in the projects knows Maurice and knows he didn’t bother nobody.”

Shreveport police officers responded to an assault and battery call near the apartment entrance just before 1 a.m. and found McKinney, who lives in the area, lying in the street suffering what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the lower body.
