Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath fights bullying due to lesbian superfan | VIDEO

Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath talks about the band’s commitment to anti-bullying advocacy, in the debut of a new episodic show on The Intelligent Channel on YouTube.

McIlrath speaks for seven minutes in the premiere of “Music Talks,” which features MTV veteran John Norris conducting the interview.

The punk rock musician shares how one of his most ardent fans, a young lesbian, wrote him and wondered if she was welcome at his band’s concerts. McIlrath said her letter affected him deeply and caused him to question his own beliefs about bullying and homophobia.

McIlrath’s introspection led to the band’s 2011 music video, “Make It Stop,” launched in partnership with the It Gets Better project.

“Music Talks” will feature one-on-one conversations with leading musicians about the social issues that are at the heart of their music.
