George Takei, Betty DeGeneres to attend CESCaL conference in San Diego this weekend

SAN DIEGO -- The fourth annual national educator conference focused on LGBTQIA youth will take place in San Diego this weekend, Feb. 15-17.

Supporting Students ~ Saving Lives is presented each year by San Diego State University's Center for Excellence in School Counseling and Leadership (CESCaL) and brings together educators from across the country to network, learn, and share resources. This year's conference honorees include Betty DeGeneres, mother of Ellen; MSNBC Anchor Thomas Roberts; actor George Takei; Forth Worth, Texas City Councilman Joel Burns; and LGBTQIA Youth Advocate Educator of the Year, Jefferson Fietek. All of these honorees will be present at the event to accept their awards at a Friday evening ceremony.

De'Borah, a contestant from NBC's "The Voice," will provide entertainment.

Keynote and featured speakers include Michael Yudin, Acting Assistant Secretary of Special Education & Rehabilitation Services; Becky Pringle of the National Education Association; Jonah Mowry, bullied teen and subject of YouTube video that went viral; Tracy & Tim Rodemeyer, parents of Jamey; Alyssa Rodemeyer; sister of Jamey; Jorge Valencia of the Point Foundation; Eric Heins of the California Teachers Association; and Abbe Land, Executive Director of the Trevor Project.
