After failing to force JC Penney to fire Ellen DeGeneres as its spokesperson, and Toys R Us to pull a gay Archie comic from its shelves, the anti-gay One Million Moms group has now targeted apparel retailer Urban Outfitters over a photo in its April catalog of two women kissing.
One Million Moms — a subsidiary of the American Family Association — is urging its significantly fewer than “one million” moms (about 46,000 based on their Facebook following) to email Urban Outfitters and demand that they stop the circulation of the catalog that features a photo of two women kissing.
The group also wants “an apology statement from the company for sending an offensive catalog to people’s homes.”
WARNING! The April 2012 catalog from Urban Outfitters has begun arriving in home mailboxes the last couple of days. On page two of this catalog is a picture of two women kissing in a face holding embrace! The ad and catalog are clearly geared toward teenagers.
Before your child has a chance to read the newest Urban Outfitters catalog call to unsubscribe from their mailing list at 1-800-282-2200, and then throw it away. When you call be sure to let them know why you are unsubscribing. Tell them you will also no longer shop at their stores if you hear this type of advertising continues. In March, One Million Moms abandoned its campaign against retailer JC Penney over its hiring of popular daytime television talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres as its spokesperson. The group had launched a boycott against the retailer because DeGeneres is gay.
Last month, Urban Outfitters came under fire from many in the LGBT community for what advocates called a “transphobic” greeting card that was offered for sale on its UK website.
