San Diego Women's Chorus to screen "Miss Representation"

SAN DIEGO -- To spread community awareness of how women are underrepresented or misrepresented in society, the San Diego Women's Chorus will present a screening of the award-winning documentary, Miss Representation on Thursday, March 29, at Queen Bee's Art & Cultural Center.

Through the event, the chorus hopes to help advocate social change to break the cycle of the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. The film offers startling facts and statistics that event organizers say will leave audiences shaken and armed with a new perspective.

A panel discussion will follow the screening, facilitated by Dr. Corrie Ort, professor of sociology and anthropology at Miramar College.

Panelists include Sophia Arrendondo, lecturer in women’s studies at San Diego State University and director of the Women’s Resource Center; Dr. Paula Tallal, professor of neuroscience, co-director of the Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience at Rutgers University and a SDWC member; and Jody Sims, chief advancement officer of Girl Scouts San Diego, who oversees communication, media and marketing.

“I saw the film when it screened in San Diego in November and I was so moved by it,” chorus president Carin Scheinin said.

“I knew that having the San Diego Women’s Chorus host a similar screening would be an incredible way to advance our mission of inspiring social action, while providing the opportunity for a different demographic in the community to view the film. We are so excited to present this incredible documentary and continue sharing the message of challenging the media’s limiting portrayal of women and girls. We’re encouraging our members and supporters to attend the screening with their teenage daughters and sons, because they are a huge part of this movement as well.”

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

The film is rated TV-14. Teenagers and mature pre-teens are highly encouraged to attend. For more information, e-mail info@sdwc.org or call (619) 291-3366.
