SAN DIEGO -- Teams are now forming for Mama's Kitchen's second annual "Man Diego" fundraising event, to be held Tuesday, March 27, from 6-9 pm.
Man Diego is friendly competition for men and women to participate in a tournament-style “Bar Olympics” fundraiser for the nonprofit organization which cooks and delivers hot, nutritionally specific meals free of charge to men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS or cancer, throughout San Diego County.
Recognizing the challenge of finding and cultivating a younger set of donors and volunteers, which are desperately needed to allow organizations like Mama's Kitchen to continue fulfilling its mission, Man Diego was created to appeal to this demographic.
"Our younger volunteers are very important to us,” said Alberto Cortés, executive director of Mama’s Kitchen. "We value the support of students and young professionals, they can relate to the fact that many of our clients are under the age of 35. The San Diego community of North Park is a perfect place to hold this event because it is a central location and enables us to introduce our organization to those who may not have heard of us before."
Man Diego will be hosted at True North Tavern, a popular restaurant, bar and nightspot in the heart of San Diego's trendy North Park neighborhood.
During the competition, teams move through four rounds of short quick bar games (sans alcohol), advance to head-to-head rounds, then compete in a taco speed-eating contest to decide the winner.
Hors d’oeuvres from Urban Solace will be available for participants and spectators while local teams -- of men or “wo”men -- compete to claim the title of "Man Diego Champions." All attendees will have the chance to win prizes, listen to music and partake in the complimentary food and drink specials throughout the evening.
A costume contest will be also held for most creative team garb, with a chance to win prizes.
A limited number of spots are available for teams to participate in the competition. Pre-event registration for a team of two people is $60, or $30 per team member. By signing up, participants receive games registration, two T-shirts, two complimentary drink tickets and two faux ‘staches (if you don’t have your own).
Spectators are welcome as well. Tickets are $15 per person and include food and one complimentary drink ticket.
True North Tavern is located at 3815 30th St. Parking is available in the North Park Parking Garage across the street.
