PASADENA, Calif. -- Friends of Project 10 has opened the application period for its annual "Models of Excellence" competition, which awards college scholarships to the selected recipients.
Student scholarships of $1,000, $2,000, and $3,000 will be awarded to high school seniors graduating from public, private and parochial schools in Southern California who have advanced the civil rights of the LGBT community. Applicants must reside in Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, or Ventura counties.
Friends of Project 10 Inc. is a nonprofit organization created in 1986 to provide funding for programs and projects to support LGBTQ youth. The organization carries out its mission by consulting with school districts throughout California and with community groups to assure that public schools and schools that receive public funding are in compliance with state and federal laws regarding sexual orientation and gender identity.
Applications and supporting materials are due by Saturday, May 12. Winners must be able to receive the award in person at an event to be held in Southern California on the last weekend in June.
