SAN DIEGO -- As summer comes to an end, Mama's Kitchen is gearing up for its popular annual fall fundraiser: Mama's Pie in the Sky, which runs from Oct. 3 to Nov. 21.
Now in its seventh year, the Mama's Pie in the Sky Thanksgiving Bake Sale will offer fresh pumpkin, pecan, apple and no-sugar-added apple pies for $20 each. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the services of Mama's Kitchen.
Since 1990, Mama's Kitchen volunteers have delivered thousands of free, hot and nutritious meals to San Diegans living with HIV/AIDS. Meals are delivered 365 days a year to ensure that no one living with AIDS or cancer goes hungry.
As the breadth of its services have grown over the years, Mama's Kitchen opened a new permanent facility to house its operations at the end of last month.
Mama's Kitchen hopes to sell 5,000 pies during the six-week sales period from Oct. 3 to Nov. 21. Meeting this goal will raise $100,000 to fund more than 35,000 meals.
Many of San Diego's top pastry chefs, caterers and bakeries will donate traditional Thanksgiving pies for the sale, and volunteers will deliver the pies to more than 20 sites throughout San Diego County for pickup on Wednesday, Nov. 23.
Individuals and teams are encouraged to volunteer to sell pies for a chance to win prizes from event sponsors. Pie sellers are also encouraged to use social media networks to promote their participation in Mama's Pie in the Sky.
"The annual Mama's Pie in the Sky pie sale provides an opportunity to check off one more thing from your Thanksgiving 'to do' list and support our mission," said Alberto Cortés, executive director of Mama's Kitchen. "When you buy a pie you provide nutritious meals, comfort and hope to fellow community members affected by AIDS or cancer.
