ACTION ALERT: San Diegans to raise money for Storefront Emergency Shelter

SAN DIEGO -- Canvass For A Cause and other advocates to help homeless youth will raise money for the Storefront Emergency Shelter on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Storefront is San Diego’s only emergency shelter program for homeless, runaway and “street” youth and provides vital services to these vulnerable kids who are at risk for disease, predation, drugs and other threats that can befall young people who have no place to go.

Youth can access the shelter with or without referral and will be assured a safe place to stay until their lives have stabilized. Professional staff and caring volunteers provide counseling and resources.

Typically, 10% to 15% of Storefront’s clients identify as LGBT.

With donations and public funding dropping, Storefront officials say they have been struggling to stay afloat at the same time that the demand for their services is expanding as other nonprofits and social services agencies are forced to reduce their activities. The poor economy means more people, young and old, find themselves on the street.

“Canvass For A Cause is always happy to help not only the LGBT community, be San Diego in general. That is why we took on this fundraiser and will be doing San Diego’s AIDS Walk on September 25,” said Tres Watson, executive director of CFAC.

Canvass For A Cause will be partnering with Storefront to help raise vitally needed money for the youth shelter and 100% of all the funds collected will be donated directly to Storefront to help keep young people off the streets. CFAC will be seeking donations for this effort, and is recruiting volunteers to join them in heading out into San Diego neighborhoods to ask residents to support this cause.

Volunteers will gather at 10 am Saturday at Canvass for a Cause Headquarters, 3705 10th Ave. No. 3, San Diego, CA 92103. There will be a brief training, then teams will head out. For more information, email field@canvassforacause.com or call (619) 630-7750.
