OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- The next public meeting of The North County LGBT Coalition will be held on the beach.
The organization invites residents of the northern part of San Diego County and others to Oceanside Beach, north of the pier, on Friday, June 24, from 6 to 9 pm for food, conversation, volleyball, and discussion of issues affecting the LGBT community in North County.
Founded in 2008, The North County LGBT Coalition works to unite the LGBT communities in the area. Because San Diego is such a geographically large region, some LGBT people outside of the region's central core may feel isolated and rely on groups like the Coalition for support and activism opportunities.
The group is currently working on a campaign to create an LGBT center in the North County, and recently hosted a fundraiser in honor of Harvey Milk Day which raised over $17,000 for the project.
As another fundraising opportunity, the organization is participating in Macy's Shop for a Cause program, taking place Saturday, Aug. 27.
Those interested in supporting the work of the North County LGBT Coalition can purchase a Macy's Shopping Pass for $5 from Coalition members and on the day of the shopping event will get 25 percent off merchandise throughout the store, and be entered to win a $500 gift card, with no purhcase necessary.
Coalition members will be selling Macy's Shopping Passes at the Friday beach meeting.
For the beach BBQ, the organization says that meat, buns, condiments, beverages, and the volleyball net will be provided. Participants should bring chairs, blankets, anything else they would like to grill, and a side dish or dessert to share.
Attendees are encouraged to park in the free public parking area near the railroad tracks.
