November 19 is Transgender Day of Remembrance.
As we take a moment to reflect on the unconscionable violence that these members of our community are subjected to, we should be sure to remember the daily violence and indignity that many transgender individuals face in immigration detention. Transgender detainees are frequently denied necessary medical treatment and are often placed in isolation (23 hour lock down) for the duration of their detention.
Breakthrough Video recently released an interview with a formerly detained transgender woman who discusses her immigration detention nightmare. A link to this video is below.
Immigration Equality is advocating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to ensure that these abuses end. For more info: www.immigrationequality.org
